Grant Description

This project focused on strengthening the Kanuku Mountains Protected Area (KMPA) through targeted investments in site-level management, community engagement, and ecological monitoring. It addressed critical funding gaps that had previously limited implementation of the KMPA Management Plan, including activities such as law enforcement, stakeholder consultations, and staff capacity building. Key interventions included preparing architectural designs for infrastructure, hiring additional rangers, conducting overflights to assess illegal activities, and supporting water quality research in the Potaro River. The project also emphasized community-based training to build local capacity for protected area governance, reinforcing commitments under the Protected Areas Act and the KfW agreement.

Outputs
Achievements Reported:
For Grant 2017-001, a request was made for a no-cost extension and amendment after its expiration date of March 31, 2018. The Protected Areas Trust Board of Trustees declined the request due to non-compliance with key grant conditions. Specifically, there was a failure to submit the required interim technical and financial reports by January 15, 2018, no timely communication on implementation challenges, and a large amount of unspent funds. The justification of “unforeseen circumstances” was deemed inadequate, prompting closure of the grant. However, the Board encouraged submission of a new application to repurpose the unused funds through a streamlined process.
