Exploring Circular Economy Pathways for Protecting Nature and Reducing Waste

11th September 2025

On July 22nd, 2025 in Georgetown, Guyana, the Protected Areas Trust (Guyana) in partnership with the Caribbean Biodiversity Fund (CBF) hosted an “Advancing Circular Economy (CE) Awareness” Workshop at Herdmanston Lodge.

The session was facilitated by Ms.Rachel Ramsey, Programme Manager for the ACE Facility run by CBF. She leads efforts to manage marine and coastal pollution through the promotion of sustainable circular economy interventions. With over 15 years of experience, Rachel has led and contributed to a wide range of initiatives and is continuously driven by her desire to make a tangible impact on environmental sustainability in the Caribbean.

During the half-day session, 25 participants were able to participate in the workshop. They listened to lessons learned from around the world and participated actively in discussions and group work activities. Attendees came from many conservation-focused organizations such as the Protected Areas Commission, Conservation International, Guyana Marine Conservation Society as well students from University of Guyana, and representatives from the private sector including the Women’s Chambers of Commerce, to name a few.

 Topics covered included:

  • Understanding CE’s role in biodiversity conservation.
  • Exploring CE-aligned business models and community initiatives.
  • Aligning CE practices with national and global sustainability goals.
  • Designing pilot projects that integrate CE into protected area operations.

At the end of the session, the participants were divided into teams and tasked with brainstorming an idea for a circular economy project that could be adapted for the local economy within protected areas Some of the ideas discussed were focused on eco-tourism and the reduction of single use plastics on tours, as well as a more community-centred focus on integrating safer disposal of organic wastes in protected areas.

Exploring circular economy pathways is a strategic imperative for the Protected Areas Trust (PAT) as it seeks to align nature conservation with sustainable resource management. By integrating circular principles—such as reducing waste, reusing materials, and regenerating natural systems—PAT is not only enhancing the resilience of protected areas but also fostering community-driven solutions that minimize environmental impact. This approach supports long-term ecological health while creating economic opportunities for local stakeholders, making conservation both practical and inclusive. In a time of mounting environmental pressures, PAT’s commitment to circularity represents a forward-thinking model for protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable development.

PAT extends gratitude to Herdmanston Lodge, Caribbean Biodiversity Fund and our major donors (Conservation International and the German Development Bank for supporting this initiative and aiding in driving this important conversation.
